Manchester United needed a centre-back and signed a top defender in Raphael Varane. The club also needed a winger and signed up the highly rated Jadon Sancho.

Manchester United also signed up Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, but many would argue that it’s the central midfield position that needed to be strengthened.

Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma was linked with a transfer move this summer, with Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham all being linked with the 25-year-old.

Former Chelsea and Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson has revealed that his biggest surprise of the summer is that none of them made the move to sign the midfielder.

“The one that surprises me is Yves Bissouma. I don’t think he’d be astronomical money and he looks like a fantastic player,” he told bettingodds.com.

“Brighton can’t turn down a bid that maybe the likes of West Ham could. I think clubs could have got him for quite a good business deal, so the biggest surprise was probably him.”
