Cristiano Ronaldo had revealed some years ago that he saw legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson as a father figure.

It was Ferguson who signed Ronaldo as a teenager from Sporting Lisbon back in 2003, and helped transform him into one of the game’s greatest ever players. Ronaldo as well made this acknowledgement during a world record move to Real Madrid in 2008.

However, 12 years after, Ronaldo was close to signing for United rivals Manchester City.

On Friday morning, reports had it that Ronaldo had agreed personal terms with Manchester City over a transfer. But then, Ferguson reportedly spoke to Ronaldo on Friday morning after learning of a possible move to City, and convinced him to choose the red half of Manchester over the blue.

Ronaldo also got calls from many ex teammates including Rio Ferdinand, and by Friday afternoon, there was a sensational twist to the story, as Ronaldo had agreed a move to Manchester United.

Former teammate Mikael Silvestre believes Sir Alex Ferguson’s conversation with Ronaldo had the desired effect.

He told Weekend Sports Breakfast: “We all know the hairdryer would have been in full power.

“I think it would have been two sentences – ‘what are you doing? Are you going mad?”

Ronaldo himself confirmed in an emotional statement upon his return to Old Trafford, that it was down to Ferguson.

He ended a lengthy statement with: “PS – Sir Alex, this one is for you…”

Ronaldo penned a two year deal with the club with the option of a further year, and we can only hope for the best.
