Southampton started the season with a 3-1 defeat to Everton on the opening weekend of the Premier League, but they proved to be a difficult opponent against Manchester United at the St Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton scored the opening goal in the first half, with a shot deflecting off Fred into the net, but Mason Greenwood came to the rescue with an equaliser in the second half.
The Saints missed a couple of chances, with David De Gea making a big save as well and Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl revealed after the game that his side should have gotten the victory.
“I am very happy I must say because we deserved to get something today,” Ralph Hasenhuttl said after the 1-1 draw at St. Mary’s.
“We had a fantastic first half and then changed everything in the second half, which is not so easy to do at half time. The first 15 minutes [after half-time] we were a little bit struggling, but then I’ve seen a team get adapted to it.
“The way we played the last 30 minutes was very good. We didn’t give them a lot of chances and had a few very good ones and could’ve won the game today, but in the end, overall it was a very good performance.”
