Solskjaer explains why he didn’t play Van de Beek against Southampton

It seems like it would be another struggle for Donny van de Beek yet again this season.

The Netherlands international didn’t seem to get game time last season, and it’s looking that way again for the £35m signing.

The 24-year-old was again left on the bench in Sunday’s weekend clash against Southampton. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted for a double pivot of Nemanja Matic and Fred, but it didn’t seem to work against the Saints.

Van de Beek has now failed to play or come in as a substitute in United’s first two games of the season.

When asked about Van de Beek’s absence in the game against Southampton, Solskjaer said: “Whenever you don’t win a game you look at it but I always look at it as much when you win as well.

“I thought Nemanja [Matic] was excellent, Antho [Martial] was close to scoring a goal but Jadon and Donny will be important for us.”
