Manchester United goalkeepers Dean Henderson and David De Gea fought for the number one spot last season, and it will be the same again this season.
It’s yet to be seen who Solskjaer will make number one when the season starts proper, but Henderson has currently been away for some time due to illness, and former United academy product Luke Chadwick thinks things have played into Solskjaer’s hands to get a first choice goalkeeper.
“I think by default it looks like David de Gea will start the season as number one,” Chadwick told CaughtOffside.
“Dean Henderson’s had an injury and is now suffering with Covid. So I think he’ll end up slotting into the number two position. And that will roll on until January when the speculation starts again.
“De Gea obviously ended last season as first choice. He started the Europa League final. Henderson had a run in the team and perhaps didn’t excel as we thought he could, with De Gea then getting the nod in the final. He didn’t cover himself in glory in the penalty shoot-out, and you then thought that might change things.
“But I think it’s been taken out of Ole’s hands really, as no one’s going to sign an injured or ill Dean Henderson. So now I think it will rumble on with De Gea starting the season again.”
