According to Metro, Manchester United are making progress in the transfer of Villarreal defender Pau Torres.
Manchester United are pushing for the signing of the Villarreal defender after Real Madrid rejected a £50million bid for Raphael Varane.
Despite Varane having just one year left on his contract, Real Madrid are holding out for a fee closer to £80million.
Manchester United have now stepped up the pursuit of Torres, who has a release clause of £51m in his contract.
While United could activate Torres’ release clause, the club feel he can be signed for a lower fee and will attempt to negotiate with the La Liga club.
The fact United are working on deals elsewhere could help persuade Madrid to lower their asking price for Varane, as they risk losing him for a free in 12 months’ time.
