Former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brace in Portugal’s opening Euro 2020 clash against Hungary.
Hungary looked like they were ready to frustrate Portugal all game and even scored a late second half goal that was ruled out for offside. Szabolcs Schon fired home with just 10 minutes to go, but was slightly in an offside position.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo ended up breaking the hearts of the Hungary fans as he scored two late goals to start their Euro 2020 campaign with style, as he has now bagged 11 goals – two more than France legend Michel Platini.
Ronaldo is now closer than ever to matching and surpassing Ali Daei’s international record of 109. Ronaldo has moved to 106 strikes and is just three goals away from the Iranian.
Ronaldo has been linked with a return to the Theatre of Dreams ahead of next season, but he has revealed that his focus is on the European Championship.
He said: “I have been playing at the highest level for many years this doesn’t faze me, maybe if I was 18 or 19 I might have had some sleepless nights, but I’m 36.
“It’s like I say, whatever comes, it will be for good. Regardless of whether you stay or leave, that’s not the most important right now.
“The most important thing is to focus on the national team, a competition of this magnitude is not played every day, I’m going to play the fifth European but in my mind it’s like the first.
“I want to start on the right foot, I want to win, I want to play well and I want to have positive thoughts, from the beginning to the end of the competition.”
