The Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) has defended the decision of the referee to disallow Edinson Cavani’s goal against Tottenham Hotspur.

Cavani gave Manchester United the lead against Tottenham Hotspur but the goal was disallowed because Scott McTominay’s hand touched Heung-min Son’s face in the build-up.

Following a subsequent VAR check, referee Chris Kavanagh used the pitch-side monitor to rule out the goal after watching several replays of the incident.

A statement from the PGMOL to Sky Sports read: “It wasn’t part of McTominay’s natural running movement and it was careless.”
