Donny van de Beek was signed from Ajax during the summer transfer window, having impressed for the Dutch side.
However, the Netherlands international has struggled for minutes under Olé Gunnar Solskjaer, and he has rarely had opportunities in the Premier League.
Manchester United legend Paul Parker believes Van de Beek should be playing more games, and revealed that he had been impressed with the 23-year-old when he watched him in Eredivisie.
Parker has told Van de Beek to be patient, urging him to take a cue from Fred, who had also struggled for game time and seemed to lack form following his £58m move to Manchester United. But Fred is now a top player for the club and has massively improved since last season.
He wrote in his Eurosport column: “I think Van de Beek should look to Fred as an example of a player who has turned his fortunes around at United – even if his situation is worse than the Brazilian’s was.
“Fred is never going to be seen as the best, but see how he’s improved. Fred is that player people talk about, about a player fighting back, which is a bonus for him and United. When Solskjaer came in, he did something good with Fred.
“So when you look at Van de Beek, an established international player, you wonder if he can follow the same path. Currently, all you’re saying to yourself is, ‘there’s something wrong there’.”
