Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood has been named in the England Under-21 squad for the European Championship finals.

The 19-year-old, who has one senior cap to his name, has been selected by coach Aidy Boothroyd for the group stage of the competition later this month.

It’s Greenwood’s first England call up since he was sent home alongside Phil Foden from senior duty in September for sneaking a beauty queen into team hotel in Iceland.

“We treat every player as an individual and we think very carefully when and where we pick them. Clearly in Mason’s situation, it was right that he wasn’t right to play for his country and to stay where he was,” said England U21 boss Aidy Boothroyd.

“That period of time has done him the world of good. That’s a positive thing.

“We felt as an organisation that Mason is going to be a key player in the future and we wanted to get him into this tournament, get some games into him and know what it’s like to be at a tournament.

“He is an outstanding player. He’s got some great experiences already with his club, playing in the Champions League and the Europa League. He’s getting plenty of opportunities but we felt it was the right thing for him to come with us.”

Mason Greenwood has been named in the England Under-21 squad for the European Championship finals.

The 19-year-old, who has one senior cap to his name, has been selected by coach Aidy Boothroyd for the group stage of the competition later this month.

It is a reward for some impressive performances of late, as he led the line against West Ham United and twice hit the woodwork in Sunday’s 1-0 win.

MASON MUST MAINTAIN NEW BENCHMARKARTICLE

England are in Group D of the tournament, with fixtures against Switzerland (25 March), Portugal (28 March) and Croatia (31 March). All three matches are live on Sky Sports in the UK. Portugal have included Diogo Dalot, who is on loan at AC Milan, in their squad.

The event is being co-hosted by Hungary and Slovenia, with the knock-out stages scheduled for May and June. The final is on 6 June in Slovenian capital Ljubjana.

Mason came off the bench for the final 12 minutes of England’s UEFA Nations League tie in Iceland last May, making his senior Three Lions bow, and has played four times for his country’s Under-21s.

He scored in a 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands at that level in November 2019, after previously being capped for the Under-18s and Under-19s.
