Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has urged Manchester United to make signing a world-class striker a priority in the summer transfer window.

The former Gunners midfielder believes signing a younger version of Edinson Cavani would be ‘perfect’ for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attack.

Despite being the Premier League leading goalscorers (53), United have failed to find the net against a ‘big six’ rival for a sixth time on the bounce as we played a barren draw against Chelsea at the weekend.

Like Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher suggested, Ray Parlour also thinks the Red Devils require a player like Harry Kane or Erling Haaland far more than they need Jadon Sancho.

He believes United cannot afford not to spend big on a top striker as it could take them to the ‘next step’ and transform the club into genuine title challengers alongside Manchester City.

“They need a striker in the summer,” he said.

“As much as loads of clubs need strikers, Manchester City will be hot on the heels of top strikers around Europe and I think Manchester United will be the same.

“Ole needs a proper striker himself and he probably knows that.

“If you can get a Cavani, five years younger… I know it’s going to cost you a lot of money but that could be the difference in going the next step and maybe trying to challenge for the title next season.”

On Borussia Dortmund sensation Haaland being a potential option, Parlour responded: “Oh, absolutely.

“It’s going to be interesting who puts the most money up for Haaland because he’s in a great position.”
