Former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has revealed that the club failed to sign Manchester City defender John Stones during his time at the club.
The Dutchman was United boss between 2014 and 2016, before he was sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho.
Van Gaal was active in the transfer market during his two-year reign at the club and signed several world-class players.
The sale of Jonny Evans prompted the Dutch tactician to make a move for Stones who was then an Everton player, but he failed to lure the player to Old Trafford.
“John Stones is back to his very best. I remember seeing him as a young defender – I thought he was fantastic and blessed with a great personality,” said Van Gaal.
“This was the reason I wanted to sign him when at Manchester United . I would’ve loved it if he came, but he chose Manchester City.
“It is great that Stones is full of confidence again after losing it for a while. Pep has given him confidence again and it is wonderful to see how well Stones is playing again.”
