Manchester United left-back, Luke Shaw, has opened up on the struggles he had to endure during the reign of former manager, José Mourinho.
Shaw and Mourinho didn’t enjoy the smoothest of relationships, with the Englishman often coming under criticism from the boss for not ‘living up to expectations’.
During a recent interview with Gary Neville, Shaw reflected on the way things were back then, and according to him, not everything that came out to the press at the time was true, since he couldn’t really defend himself.
In his own words, “It was a very hard time because sometimes I wasn’t able to get my word across or people were only hearing it from one side of the story.
“I knew at the time it was better just to keep quiet. A lot of people were behind me here so I knew I had the backing but I knew I needed to keep quiet and improve.
“I have gone through a lot which has made me a better person.”
José famously once said he had to ‘make every decision’ for Shaw after a draw between United and Everton back in 2017, so things were very difficult between them, and they didn’t improve until the Portuguese departed Old Trafford in 2018.
