Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney wanted Sir Alex Ferguson to sign then Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil so that he could play as a forward for the Red Devils.
The club all-time record goalscorer was frustrated with being played out of position and had a heated row with the United legendary manager in 2010, when he almost threatened to leave the club and join Premier League rivals Chelsea or Manchester City.
Recalling his conversations on the matter of signing Ozil, Ferguson had said in 2013: “Wayne asked away because he felt he was playing out of position.
“I can understand that. My judgment was that Wayne wasn’t playing well enough.”
Rooney wanted answers about why United didn’t pursue the signing of Ozil, who moved to Real Madrid from Werder Bremen in 2010.
Ferguson believed that Wayne was being influenced by his agent Paul Stretford at the time.
In the end, Rooney snubbed a move to Chelsea and extended his Manchester United contract.
