Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher insists Southampton defender Jan Bednarek should not have been sent off for a foul on Anthony Martial in Manchester United’s win over the Saints.

The red card was the second that Saints got in the game, though it caused some controversy as the player himself claimed Martial didn’t consider it as foul.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, this is what Gallagher said:

“I didn’t think it was a penalty. A lot of people I have spoken to today have said it is, and a lot say it isn’t.

“Bednarek goes to make a challenge, I think he realises and he goes to pull out, and I think Martial drags his leg.

“That said, once the referee gives the penalty and it is checked by VAR, they said it wasn’t a clear and obvious error, then they have to check whether there is a sanction and VAR felt there should be a sanction and sent Mike[Dean] over to the screen.

“He looks at it and sees that the keeper hasn’t got the ball and therefore under the denial of a goalscoring opportunity, once the penalty has been given and proved, Bednarek unfortunately has to receive a red card.”
