Former Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley has defended Manchester United captain Harry Maguire amid unfair criticisms.
The former United academy product claims the United defender is seen as an easy target when he plays a bad game despite being a top-level player.
He also backed the club as genuine title contenders and believes we can go all the way through the season.
Speaking to Manchester Evening News, former Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley said: “I think the criticism that they’ve got in the last year or so is very unfair at times, I mean especially their individual players.
“They’re doing a fantastic job and sometimes it’d be nice to see like praise for people like Harry Maguire, who plays every game, he’s at a high level but when he does have that one bad game everyone seems to jump on it.
“So, I think against all the adversity they’re doing a great job and, yeah, like I said before it’s, it’s good for English football if Man United are contenders, which it looks like they could be this year.
“A lot of credit has got to go to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. You need time to develop a title-contending team and he’s looking like he’s got that now and I wish all the best to them.”
The Red Devils will leapfrog rivals Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table with a win or draw against Burnley on Tuesday night.
