Former Manchester United striker, Dimitar Berbatov, has reacted to Olé Gunnar Solskjaer’s recent claim that his side is set up to fail, due to their busy fixture list.
United played Istanbul Bakasehir on Wednesday in the champions league, before taking on Everton just three days later in the premier league.
The Red Devils won the weekend fixture 3-1, but it didn’t stop Solskjaer from launching an attack on premier league bosses.
According to the Norwegian, his side were set up to fail with the type of fixture schedule they have.
But Berbatov, who spend years at Old Trafford before leaving, has countered Solskjaer’s claims, saying it’s nothing new to have a busy fixture list, and the Man United coach must get used to it.
Speaking to BetFair, Berbatov said, “This season, there are a lot of games in a short space of time. Matches in the Premier League, in Europe and then all of a sudden international breaks, but this cannot be used as an excuse.
“Manchester United have faced fixture congestion for many years, during my time and even before my time. Man United are used to playing in the Premier League, Europe and in the cups – we used to win them all as well.
“There can be no excuses, the situation is the same for everyone, the performances are just not consistent enough. They need to improve because other teams will get ahead and they could become a real embarrassment.”
