According to reports in Germany, Manchester United failed in a move to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby this summer.
With the club unable to seal a deal for top target Jadon Sancho, the club viewed the 21-year old as an alternative.
United ended up signing young wingers Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo after failing to sign Diaby.
Report from Sport Bild claims that the Red Devils were willing to pay up to €50 million (£45m) for the 21-year-old, who has also attracted interest from Manchester City. But the German side rejected the move and are now looking to extend Diaby’s contract.
“It wasn’t just Kai Havertz this summer,” said Leverkusen’s sporting director Rudi Voller.
“We had three or four other players who were the focus of foreign clubs. One of them was Moussa Diaby.”
The 21-year-old, who came through Paris Saint-Germain’s academy, joined the German club last year.
Diaby, who primarily plays on the left wing, has 10 goals and nine assists in 48 appearances for Leverkusen.
