According to the Times, Manchester United will look to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano next summer after deciding against signing him this summer.
It is believed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was keen on defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window, but failed to bring in any.
Our defensive struggles this season which has seen us concede 12 goals already has highlighted the need to bring in a quality defender, and the club have identified Upamecano as the player to help solve the problem.
The Frenchman signed a new deal with the Bundesliga club to remove a £45million release clause in his contract. However, while that strengthened Leipzig’s desire to keep him blast summer, the new contract actually includes a lower release clause of around £38m which will become active in 2021.
Reports have claimed the club have decided to pay his release clause to bring him to Old Trafford. However, the club will likely face strong competition from across Europe for the defender’s signature as he’s considered one of the finest young centre-back in the world.
The club will look to cash in on the likes of Phil Jones, Marcus Rojo and the injury-prone Eric Bailly who have all failed to impress so far. Academy product, Axel Tuanzebe is viewed as a future captain by Solskjaer, but the 22-year-old has managed just one match in the last 10 months and his injury record means United cannot rely on him just yet.
Meanwhile, Upamecano faces an audition on Wesdnesday night as he is set to feature in Leipzig’s Champions League clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
