Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has insisted his side should have been awarded a penalty against Manchester United, during the goalless draw at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Harry Maguire seemed to grab Cesar Azpilicueta by the neck, as he pulled the Chelsea captain down during a corner kick, and both the referee, Rowan Atkinson and VAR ignored calls from Chelsea players for a penalty to be given to them.
But Frank Lampard, while speaking to Sky Sports after the match, criticised VAR for failing to call the referee’s attention to the offence.
He said after the match, “I think it was a clear penalty. I didn’t see it at the time from where I was stood. It was a hard call for the referee.
“But why didn’t the VAR bring it to his attention? VAR was much too quick to move on. If the referee sees it then he gives a penalty. The frustrating thing is that referees had been using the monitors this season.
“For some reason they have stopped doing it – and I can’t understand why. I don’t think the referee could see the headlock. So he should have been given the chance to review it.”
