Former Manchester United forward, Andy Cole has warned David De Gea he needs to improve on his performances from last season, or risk losing his place in the starting eleven to Dean Henderson.
Henderson has so far, shown composure and awareness in goal in the two matches he had played for United since returning from his loan move at Sheffield United, and Cole believes he’s edging closer to replacing De Gea unless the Spaniard improves.
Speaking on Sky Sports recently, when asked if Henderson can replace De Gea as United’s number one, Cole said, “I think De Gea is in a little bit of credit from his previous seasons at Manchester United.
“I think it is more what he doesn’t do. If he has a bit of a season like he did last season, I think Henderson will definitely get his opportunity.
“Henderson has proven to everyone that he is a very good goalkeeper, and De Gea is going to have a battle on to stay as No 1 for Manchester United.”
Obviously, we can’t disrespect De Gea’s contributions towards helping United in the many years he’s been at Old Trafford, but ultimately, the sport is performance-based. Unless you’re willing to continually be at the best level, someone else is always lurking and waiting to push you aside.
