Manchester United legend, Andy Cole, has expressed belief in Mason Greenwood’s ability to thrive under massive competition.
The 18 year old enjoyed a good 2019/20 season at United under Olé Gunnar Solskjaer, where he finished as one of the club’s top scorers, with 18 goals across all competitions.
Greenwood has also began this season well, but United’s long-standing interest in Borussia Dortmund winger, Jadon Sancho, has somewhat raised doubts over his future at the club, with questions over his ability to keep coming up.
But Cole, who has always been a fan of Greenwood has said he believes the youngster will not be affected by the arrival of Sancho, should the deal be completed.
He told Manchester Evening News, “He’s a kid and as a kid even more so you feel more threat.
“If things are going well and they bring someone else in, as a kid you always want to show that little bit more. I’ve said about Mason before that he’s got a massive future ahead of him, massive future, he’s a real talent.
“Only time will tell where [which position] he’ll end up. He’s another one, like Marcus, you can only ask them what you believe their best positions are. To speculate and say ‘I believe it’s this or that’… they’ll have the real answers.
“Coming back after the lockdown, he [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] had him playing really well, which is a great positive. They are always going to create problems and score goals.”
While Sancho would no doubt start ahead of Greenwood, based on his exploits at Dortmund last season, Greenwood’s record also show the lad can offer him serious competition when he arrives, which is very healthy.
Ultimately, we want to win, and if we have great competition for places in the squad, it would even further boost our chances for more success.
