Many have been drawn into the competition between David De Gea and Dean Henderson, and Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has finally aired his opinion.
Former Manchester United number one, Edwin van der Sar, has said he believes having multiple top shotstoppers at Old Trafford is a positive thing for the Red Devils.
Dean Henderson recently penned down a contract extension with United, after impressing while on loan at Sheffield United, and is expected to remain at the club to compete for the number one spot with David De Gea, who hasn’t enjoyed the same consistency he did during his first few years at old Trafford.
The presence of backup goalkeeper, Sergio Romero and Lee Grant, also makes the department a little crowded at United, but van der Sar believes the competition will help push them to give their best to the club.
He said on the MUTV Group Chat, “That’s what it’s always been about.
“When you’re a young player, you look up to the guys who are in the first team. Then when you start training [with them] you start to challenge and start to work hard so you’re ready when that moment comes.
“When you get that chance you need to grab it. Some boys are lucky in that you might win, score or give an assist, or you might be unfortunate and lose a game and then the manager might think it’s difficult to bring you in another time.”
Dean Henderson, himself, has promised to fight to be United’s number one, as Solskjaer continues to show support for De Gea, who has been targeted for criticism by fans and pundits.
But ultimately, the club has to do what is best for it, which means, the Spaniard will have no choice than improve as quickly as possible, or risk losing his position.
