Manchester United legend Gary Neville has given his backing for David de Gea to remain as the club’s first-choice goalie next season.
Neville believes it will be difficult for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to drop the Spaniard now, and also feels Dean Henderson still has a lot to prove at the highest level.
Speaking on Sky Sports about Manchester United’s goalkeeper conundrum, Gary Neville said: “David De Gea definitely starts as number one because there was a point where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could’ve dropped him towards the end of the season.
“However, he stuck with him at that point and we are only around four weeks later. I still think Dean Henderson’s got a lot to prove. It’s not a given that he’s going to go into the team at Man United and be everything that everyone thinks he’s going to be.
“He hasn’t got the experience yet to handle Old Trafford or to show us that he can handle Old Trafford. We hope he can show the potential he’s got but that’s the hardest position on a football field by a long way. It’s the biggest pressure on a football field.”
Meanwhile, Henderson has returned to the club from his impressive loan spells at Sheffield United. The Englishman will be looking to challenge De Gea for the no.1 spot.
