Manchester United youngster Tahith Chong has named Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne and Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry as players he’d love to emulate after completing a loan move to Werder Bremen.

The 20-year-old winger is regarded as one of the most promising players to emerge from United’s academy.

The Dutch youngster sealed a temporary move to the Bundesliga outfit. He has been training with his new team-mates at their training camp in Austria this week, and relishing the challenge ahead of him.

“It’s definitely in the back of your head when you come here,” Chong told Bremen’s website when asked about the club’s reputation for bringing through young talent.

“The club’s history and reputation for helping players like Gnabry and De Bruyne advance their careers is always good to hear, so I’m sure this the right place to continue my development.”

Chong added: “I already knew about the club and how big Werder are in Germany when I first spoke to the coach.

“The decision was a very easy one. The approach of the club is also excellent so I knew straightaway that this will be the right team for me.

“Having watched games from last season, it’s clear that there are a lot of young players coming through in the Bundesliga and that’s really exciting to see. You can see it here in Bremen as well with players who are the same age or younger than me!

“My main aim to play as much as possible and to help Werder to win as many games as we can.”

Chong has struggled for playing time since his senior debut midway through the 2018/19 campaign and the Netherlands Under-21 international takes full responsibility for failing to make more of an impact at United.

“I played in the Europa League [this past season]. Then you have to perform,” he told German publication Bild.

“I have to look at myself honestly and say: I didn’t do it the way I wanted to.

“So I have to keep working and see that I can do better in a year or two.”

Chong continued: “Werder are a big club in Germany that can help me develop.

“I’ve always been a football nerd, I’ve looked at everything – including Werder. The club had many Dutch players such as Eljero Elia.

“I hope I can play a lot. I don’t know much about the city of Bremen yet.”

De Bruyne and Gnabry have both enjoyed remarkable successes after leaving Werder in recent years.
