Manchester United legend Louis Saha has expressed surprise over the form and contributions of Anthony Martial this season.
The former United striker also admitted that the Frenchman displays as the club’s first-choice striker has been sensational as he was able to surpass expectations.
Martial scored 23 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions.
Saha feels the arrival of Bruno Fernandes and the return of Paul Pogba to full fitness helped Martial to perform at his best.
“I’ve been hugely impressed by Anthony Martial this season and he has caught me a little bit by surprise,” Saha said speaking exclusively to the Football Index Podcast.
“Martial has grabbed the opportunity to be Manchester United’s first choice striker with both hands and he has scored a lot of goals.
“He is proactively influencing games by demanding the ball as that central striker, whereas I thought he was quite passive and reactive when he was out on the wing.
“Martial has shown all of the attributes you need to be a Manchester United no.9 and I think having both Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in midfield has made a huge difference.
“He now trusts the quality in that midfield to find his runs and to create chances for him.
“That Fernandes and Pogba midfield has allowed Martial to flourish and he’s only going to get better in that role.
“You can see the confidence in his dribbling and clever passes, it’s been impossible for defenders to keep him quiet.”
