Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand is adamant that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves to be applauded for achieving the main target of securing Champions League football for the club despite losing three semifinals this season.

The Norwegian lost the Carabao Cup semifinal to City, the FA Cup semifinal to Chelsea, and the Europa League semifinal to Sevilla.

Speaking on the BBC about Solskjaer, the former United centre-back said: “Attacking and vibrant football has been the most pleasing point.

“He’s ticked a box in terms of getting the team back into the Champions League, which I think would have been his remit at the beginning when he got his hands on the reins.”
