Jesse Lingard has trended on Twitter more times than once in recent weeks, but after his involvement in Manchester United’s victory over Leicester City on Sunday, it was different, and even bigger.
The 27 year old sent football lovers on Twitter into a frenzy, after scoring United’s second goal of the match, by nicking into an empty net, following a blunder from Kasper Schmeichel.
The goal wasn’t spectacular, but it was an important one for Lingard who had been on the receiving end of major criticism this season because of his nightmarish decline in form.
Prior to the match, Lingard hadn’t scored in the Premier League since 2018, and had just two goals to his name.
What’s more? Many had even given up hope of the United Academy graduate scoring, as it was discovered later on Sunday that someone had bet £10 he wouldn’t score or assist throughout the season. So bad was Lingard’s story, but he was to have the last laugh, and scored in the 98th minute.
After the match, Lingard trended at number one on Twitter, which just shows how much it meant not just to him, but also many football lovers.
We can now only hope for the best for our man, whatever happens from here, whether he stays with us or decides to make a move elsewhere.
