Premier League legend Mark Schwarzer has urged goalie David de Gea to leave Manchester United and also believes Dean Henderson is ready to take over as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
De Gea has made over 400 appearances for the Red Devils, but his form over the past year has attracted much criticism, however, and Schwarzer believes he needs to move on to revive his career.
“When you’ve been somewhere for so long, people will think you’re on the decline, that you’re finished and that you need to move on almost to give you that kick-start to rejuvenate,” he told Sky Sports.
“For me that was the best thing I ever did because it gave me that motivation to prove a new set of fans wrong and your new team-mates wrong.
“Personally I think it’s time for De Gea to move on. I think there’s a comparison to when Pepe Reina was at Liverpool.
“There was a period of about 18 months when he made a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes. For him, he needed to move on and once he did he regained that form and became a really good goalkeeper again.
“I think it’s the same with David de Gea at Manchester United and it’s time for him to move on.”
