Manchester United legend Gary Neville has revealed he was pleased by Anthony Martial’s reaction to being substituted in our 3-0 victory over Aston Villa as it showed that the forward wants to really play for the club.
Martial, who has impressed since the season’s restart with four goals in the Premier League, was irate when being replaced by Odion Ighalo in the second half.
Discussing Martial’s reaction on his Sky Sports podcast, Ex-United right-back Neville said: “Goalkeepers would rather win 1-0 than 5-1. They want a clean sheet and it’s the same with strikers. They want the goal.
“Martial’s reaction to going off was good because he wants to stay on the pitch even when the game was won.
“Martial wants to change his perception, he wants to get into that 20-goal mark in the Premier League to be in the company of the Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane who score that regularly.”
Neville also claimed that the Frenchman’s reaction reminded him of former United team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was known for his fiery temperament during his time at Old Trafford.
“Ruud used to do the same thing, you would win 4-0 and he would be sulking with his shin pads because he hasn’t scored,” Neville added.
“And then we would win 3-2 him with scoring twice and there would be a smirk on his face.”
