Manchester United legend Wes Brown believes Brandon Williams has given Luke Shaw a stern challenge with his performances for the team this season, but has urged for the youngster to be slowly eased in as a regular starter.
Williams, 19, has established himself as one of the most promising young talents to emerge at Old Trafford after breaking into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team back in September.
The left-back has made 29 appearances in his debut campaign, but is yet to start for the Red Devils since the season resumed last month, with Luke Shaw impressing in recent weeks.
Brown is delighted with how Solskjaer has managed Williams in his breakthrough season and has urged fans to be patient with the teenage full-back as he makes his way in the senior game.
“There’s no rush at all,” Brown told the Webby and O’Neill YouTube channel.
“I try and explain this to people when they say Williams should play every game and I say, “Not necessarily’.
“Williams is giving a problem to Shaw, 100 per cent. That’s what he should be doing.
“He’s a young lad, coming up. He wants to play week-in, week-out. Now Shaw will understand that as well which will step up his game as well.
“Shaw’s not at United for no reason – he’s there because he’s a player. And sometimes it takes another player to put that pressure on to make you come out of yourself a little bit and start playing well again and that’s what Ole’s done.”
