Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to trust the defensive partnership of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof instead of spending big on a new centre-back this summer.
Asked whether there is anybody who could improve United at centre-half, Brown told the Webby & O’Neill YouTube channel: “I think you can always bring someone in but if you’re looking at it, the goals against and the games they’ve played together… I like those two.
“I don’t think Ole will change it because you’ve got [Eric] Bailly there as well and the young lads coming up. He’ll know the whole picture.
“I think stick with these two unless they start playing really badly and then you have to change it.”
Brown is a big fan of Axel Tuanzebe and claims the youngster has the ability to challenge for a starting spot if he gets a chance to prove himself.
“Axel has been injured but I watched him in pre-season because I was over there and he was excellent,” Brown added.
“He’s got to the stage now where he wants to play but at this moment in time he’s got that challenge of trying to get back in the team and that’s always a difficult thing.
“Centre-halves aren’t like midfielders or strikers. I think you have to keep the same two.
“And if they’ve got a combination with good sense and play between each other, I don’t think you change it for that simple reason.
“But he has got the ability to do it. All he needs is to try and get in and then the consistency.”
