Manchester United striker Anthony Martial has said he did not enjoy being coached by former manager Jose Mourinho.
The Frenchman has admitted that the Portuguese was too motivational and was desperate to prove him wrong during their time together at the club.
Mourinho and Martial famously fell out after the French forward left United’s pre-season training camp to attend the birth of his son.
Earlier this season, Mourinho also accused Martial of wanting to play as a central striker ‘for the wrong reasons’.
During their time together at United, Martial admits he was unhappy with Mourinho’s decision to publicly drop him from the team but believes that acted as motivation to win back his place.
“It’s true that I’d have preferred it if he’d told me directly, there is no need to say it in front of everybody,” Martial told RMC Sport.
“After that you definitely want to prove him wrong. He didn’t start me during the first few games and each time I came on I scored.
“In the end he told me: ‘You see, now you understand what I wanted’. It can get to you.
“You just want to show him you deserve to be on the pitch.”
