Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood has bagged his first senior team goal for Manchester United in just his first start of the season.
Manchester United had to dig deep to get a win over Kazakhstan side FC Astana, with United youngster Mason Greenwood bailing the club out with a 73rd minute strike.
To score his goal, Greenwood was given the ball on the right corner of the penalty area from where he beat a man as he took the ball to his left leg and then back to his right before hammering home a low shot from a tight angle.
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has now likened Greenwood to former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie.
“I would say he has a great feel for the game,” Hargreaves told BT Sport.
“Every time he touched the ball there was a purpose to it, he didn’t try and force things, he took what was there.
“For a young kid at 17 to have that composure in the box, he had a picture of what he wanted – come in on the left foot, chop, like Van Persie, a good finish. That’s a top player, he’s going to be a top player.”
The 17-year-old has made just one Premier League start for United so far, but Hargreaves believes Greenwood is Premier League material and that all he needs is to stay fit and healthy.
“I think he could play in the Premier League, he’s going to be a big piece of the puzzle,” continued the former Manchester United midfielder.
“Stay fit, stay healthy and the sky is the absolute limit for him, I think he’s going to be a really special player.
“I think he can be whatever he wants to be, he could be the top goal scorer in the Premier League one day.
“I like how he can play multiple positions, can play on the right, left, through the middle, at 10, they just need to find his right position.”
