After failing to sign a midfielder during the last transfer window despite the departure of Ander Herrera, Manchester United have been backed to spend £90m on West Ham midfielder and England international Declan Rice.
“West Ham have got a really special player on their hands,” Noel Whelan told Football Insider.
“They will struggle to hold on to him because the big clubs will be hot on his trail.
“I think Declan Rice could be the next player who goes for a Premier League record fee. We have just seen Harry Maguire go for £80million and I wouldn’t be surprised if Rice goes for more than that, above £90million, even.
“He’s young, English, hugely talented and is such a long way from his peak. You look at a team like Man United, who need a midfield anchorman and you can see it happening.
“They don’t mind paying over the odds for a player, as we saw in the summer. I could see them looking to get Rice in January.”
Rice was linked with a move to Manchester United throughout the summer and the 20 year old midfielder believes he has the ability to play for a top club like Manchester United.
“Don’t get me wrong, I think I’ve got the ability to play for a club like that. But it’s all about the timing and I don’t think the timing is right for me at all. I’ve still got so much to learn,” he said, in an interview with FourFourTwo.
“I’m loving it at West Ham, the connection between me and the supporters is special. I’ve become one of the fans’ favourites and the manager likes me.”
