Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has backtracked on his criticism of the signing Harry Maguire.
The Sky pundit predicted the 26-year-old will struggle at the club. He branded the player’s record-breaking transfer fee as ridiculous.
However, the defender went on to produce a Man of the Match display in his first game for the Red Devils, helping United to keep a clean sheet in a 4-0 demolition of Chelsea.
Merson now admits his comments were ‘disrespectful’ as he looks to apologise to Maguire:
“I thought I was very critical of him if I’m being honest. I tried to get hold of him today and I will talk to him tomorrow as he texted me back.
“And I thought I was a bit critical if I’m being honest – I thought what I wanted to say did not really come across the way I thought it should have. I sort of did not really give him the credit he deserves of how good he is.
“So I was a bit disrespectful in that way. He has played in World Cup semi-finals, he is an international and I was out of order and I will be the first to admit that.”
