Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to pick United’s next long-term captain following the departure of Ecuador international Antonio Valencia at the end of last season.
While Ashley Young wore the armband for the majority of last campaign, several other players are believed to be in the running for the captaincy.
According to Sunday Express’ Tony Banks, Manchester United world class goalkeeper David De Gea should be given the captain’s armband at Old Trafford.
Banks said: “With such uncertainty about who is going to be in the United team this season, who might be going and who staying, the captaincy is not an easy choice. Not only that, but there seem to be very few leaders in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.
“So I would go for one of the few men you can guarantee will be in the team – as long as he signs his new six year deal. And that is David De Gea. Experienced, world class – and so far, loyal.”
