Manchester United will have a new captain this season after Antonio Valencia’s departure at the end of last season.
Ashley Young and Paul Pogba are contenders to be captain but Pogba’s future as a Manchester United player is uncertain as he continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid while Young’s appearances are likely to be limited this season.
Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has backed centre-back Chris Smalling and midfielder Nemanja Matic to be United captain this season.
Robson said, according to Daily Mail: “It’s getting on that pitch and demanding from your team-mates and then trying to lead by example as well.
“That is what some of our lads have got to step up to the mantle and prove that.
“When I look at the United squad and watch training, Chris Smalling and Nemanja Matic have got it in them.
“During my playing time, we had loads of captains on the pitch. People like Kasper Schmeichel, Brucey (Steve Bruce), Roy Keane, Paul Ince, Mark Hughes.”
Robson knows what it means to be captain of Manchester United. He joined Manchester United in 1981 for a British transfer record fee of £1.8million and went on to become United’s captain, lifting United’s first Premier League trophy under Sir Alex Ferguson in 1993.
