Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata scored a free-kick on Saturday that sparked United’s comeback in our dramatic 3-2 victory over Newcastle United.
His goal against Newcastle United was his eighth goal direct from a free-kick in the Premier League since he made his Premier League debut in August 2011 as a Chelsea player.
Since August 2011, no other player in the Premier League has been able to match Juan Mata’s free-kick prowess.
Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson comes closest with seven free-kick goals since August 2011, while Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen and West Ham’s Robert Snodgrass are all on six.
Manchester United legend David Beckham has the all-time Premier League goals from free-kick record, scoring 18 goals direct from free-kicks.
Mata is placed 12th on the all-time list but needs three free-kick goals to match another Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who is placed 4th on the list with 11 goals from free-kicks.
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola are placed second on the list with 12 goals.
With none of the players above Mata still playing, Mata has the chance to climb further up the list.
