Manchester played a goalless draw with Valencia at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, and United have difficult tests ahead.
United will host Newcastle on Saturday, and will return from the international break with a trip to London to face Chelsea. After Chelsea, Mourinho’s side will host Juventus in the Champions League, and Mourinho believes his side must beat Newcastle this weekend.
He said: “We have Newcastle before the league stops [for the international break] and, after that, Chelsea and Juventus in three days. It’ll be very good for the team if we can beat Newcastle.”
Speaking about the impact of the draw with Valencia in United’s Champions League quest, Mourinho admitted that although it wasn’t the best of results, but it was fair. He said: “It’s not a good result but not a bad result. Normally, Valencia will be with seven points after the fourth fixture.
“I believe they are going to get six points against Young Boys. So they will have seven and we have two matches with Juventus to make points and, the last match, we will probably go there [the Mestalla] to decide but it’s a very difficult group.”
Speaking ahead of United’s next Champions League clash against Juventus, United left-back Luke Shaw believes United must get the three points against Juve when they come visiting Old Trafford.
He said: “We look at the next game, we’ve got Juventus coming here and it’s another very tough game. It’s what the Champions League is about, you want to be playing against the best teams.
“I think that’s maybe what we need, we need a big team to come here and for us to pick ourselves up again and show why we’re Man United.”
